Spotting Authentic Silver Jewelry

Silver is a fairly cheap material, but there is still the possibility of getting fake silver, especially when targeting the younger customer who really doesn’t know what to look for.  There are a few simple things you can do to verify the authenticity of the silver and ensure that it is not just silver plating.  Taking the time to check these little things is important when you are purchasing silver, because you definitely don’t want to be ripped off and if you are buying just a piece or two to test out a wholesaler’s viability at being a supplier, then doing this is almost a requirement.  This is especially true when buying silver rings or silver earrings.

The first thing to remember is that pure silver simply doesn’t exist.  If a piece of jewelry was made from 100% silver, then it would be too soft and easily become warped and broken over time.  To be true silver it should contain at least 92.5% silver, the other percentage is made up of alloys that harden the metal and improve its durability.  While it is going to be very small, the percentage of silver on the piece should be stamped or engraved somewhere on the item.  You may need a magnifying class to see it but it will definitely be there.  If you are looking at silver rings, you want to make sure that the reflection is clear and shiny.

There is one major test that can be done to truly test whether a specific piece of jewelry is silver or just silver plating.  You can even have them perform this test at the jewelry store if you are truly skeptical.  Through the use of nitric acid you can find out the purity of your silver.  What you need to do is find a piece of the jewelry that is unnoticeable and rub it thoroughly to break the service plating.  Applying a few little drops of nitric acid there and just waiting a few minutes will reveal the truth.  If the liquid turns a gray cloudy color then the piece is pure silver, but if it turns green then you are working with a fake item.

Silver jewelry is beautiful and something you should always have in your collection.  The price makes it affordable but you need to avoid the cheap imitations.  Just looking for the maker’s mark on the inner band and the number showing the purity level are good simple steps you can do to ensure the authenticity of your silver jewelry.  The nitric acid test should be employed when you are spending a lot of money or when deciding whether or not to change your silver supplier.  If you are looking at silver earrings or silver rings, make sure that the nitric acid test is done correctly.
